JAPAN’S JOURNEY OF CRAFT, COLOR, AND RENEWAL: FALL 2027
Opulent Quilt Journeys: November 7-18, 2027
I’m am thrilled to be leading a tour with Opulent Quilt Journey’s next year!
Tour Overview
Travel through central Japan on a journey built around the idea that nothing beautiful has to end when it’s worn out. This twelve-day route moves from Osaka through the indigo country of Tokushima, the garden city of Takamatsu, the art islands off Okayama, and into Kyoto’s textile district, before finishing in Tokyo’s fabric markets. Along the way, you’ll dip cloth into centuries-old dye vats, browse vintage and antique kimono silk, and see how mending and remaking have long been part of Japanese craft rather than an afterthought.
Indigo, the deep blue dye known in Japan as ai, grown and fermented using methods passed down for generations, will color your journey. You’ll work with dye artisans to create your own beautiful blue cloth in Tokushima and Kyoto. Other hands-on workshops include recycled kimono, boro sashiko stitching, and gilded-mend kintsugi repair, paired with quieter moments in temple gardens and a full day on Naoshima Island among some of the country’s best contemporary art museums. This is a trip for anyone drawn to color, texture, and the craft of giving old things new life.
