2025 Teaching/Speaking Engagements

LORRAINE WOODRUFF-LONG / QUILTING IN THE FOG

TEACHING/SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS 2025 (as of Nov 2024)

JANUARY 2025

“String Theory 3 Ways” / ONLINE /  Thurs., Jan 9 – Sat. Jan. 11

In “String Theory 3 Ways”, you’ll learn how to make improvisational string blocks using a fabric foundation (I suggest an old sheet) and create simple square shapes, oblong blocks using the “stitch and flip” method. Tap into your creative self and explore your own designs and personality. You can add interest through varying your strip shapes and including inserts. Stretch your improvisational muscles while using those scrap strips.

“Express Yourself! Creating Text for Quilt and Fiber Projects”/ IN PERSON / Sun. Jan. 11

Learn how to create and use custom applique lettering in your quilts and sewing projects. From the mundane to the shocking, using text to express your creativity adds a personal touch to your quilts. Great for expressing everything from “Happy Birthday” to “Smash the Patriarchy” – just make it yours! What will YOU say?

Basic Improv Quilting Part 1 “Getting to the Top” / IN PERSON/ 6-part Series Begins Wed. Jan. 15-Feb. 26

Learn the basics of “improv” quilting with creative freedom and without the restrictive rules that can overwhelm new (and even experienced!) quilters! In six sessions, students will learn the fundamentals of constructing a quilt and more than 6+ quilt blocks and techniques which allow learners to springboard into their own unique arrangements and creations. Students will complete a pieced “flimsy” top, ready to be quilted.

COMING SOON: Once-a-Month “Saturday Quilt Lab”

FEBRUARY 2025

Improv Mosaic 1.2.3 / IN PERSON/ Sat. Feb. 1, 10am-4pm

Learn the concept of building a improvised mosaic quilt using improvised log cabin blocks at ratios of 1:2:3 In this workshop you’ll learn to create an Improv Mosaic 20”x20” or 24”x24” sized pillow or wall hanging using blocks of 2”, 4” and 6”. Participants will leave with a pattern and the skills to build a larger throw or bed quilt. This is a fantastic process for using scraps – even the smallest pieces! Participants learn how simply and quickly make numerous small log cabin blocks via “scrappy chain piecing”, and how to use these small starter blocks to create unique medium and large blocks. Participants can use the pattern and ratios to “riff” on what’s learned in class to create their own block designs and versions beyond the log cabin blocks taught in class.

“Making It Up Crumb Quilt Blocks”  / IN PERSON/ Sat. March 8, 10am-4pm

Do you have fabric scraps you can’t bear to toss and want to find a creative way to use them? This is the class for you! Crumb quilt blocks are small, patchwork pieces created from small scraps of fabric, often referred to as “crumbs.” These fabric bits, which are often too small to use in traditional quilting, are sewn together randomly to form unique and colorful blocks. The resulting blocks can be used to construct a larger quilt or project. Crumb quilt blocks are a great way to embrace creativity, reduce waste, and enjoy the art of quilting in a laid-back, playful manner. Instructor will provide small baggies of fabric scraps for $5.What: 6-Part Beginning Improv Series
